The local 4-H Chapter will be putting on an event this coming Saturday, October 12, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The group will spend the morning clearing brush and tree debris at the site, similar to the Spring clean up that the City and Cemetery Board underwent in the spring.
The City is planning on adding additional staff to help maintain parks and public grounds (like the cemeteries) beginning in 2020. Staff is working with all interested parties to ensure the site is featured as a unique attraction in the City going forward. Some of the uncovered grave stones date back to the early 1800s and the site is widely considered to be a burial site for freed slaves in that era.
For additional information about the clean up please contact Assistant City Manager Zack Daniel at 913-356-6002.
